One of the greatest innovations of mankind is poker, as it is probably the most popular type of card game ever invented. It is played by betting on the value of a card combination in your possession, which is called a “hand,” and placing that bet in a central pot. The winner usually is the one who has the highest hand or whoever makes the other players fold, either by bluff or by an aggressive transparency.

But of course, you already know that, being the wily and cunning poker player that you are.

However, there is much to say about online poker gaming and how it is strikingly identical and at the same time different from a real poker game. Below are some information about online poker that should serve as a guide for beginners:

First, online poker is played the same way as, for the lack of a better term, offline poker. The rules are pretty much the same, save some regulations imposed by individual poker site owners, which are not very often. Most of the time, the rules on Texas Holdem, Stud, or Draw poker are essentially the same online.

Second, since it is online, it transcends national boundaries and you can play against anyone who has an Internet connection anywhere in the world. Online poker also has the attributes of a normal chat room, were people can interact the way they do on most chat sites. While you can play against some of the worlds best poker players, the downside is that you are also exposed to playing with the worst. Don’t you just hate it when you see amateurs hitting in the flop?

Third, you can play for real money or just play money. Most poker sites have their own system of how players can play for real money. Some use credit cards, money orders, bank transfers and the like. If you are going to play for real money, just make sure you play in a credible poker site. Joining one can sometimes be complicated. So be sure to visit the FAQs section of the site and read their terms and conditions carefully. But if you don’t plan on playing for real money, then you can still enjoy online poker.

Fourth, one of the main differences of online and offline poker is that you cannot see your opponents in the game. You cannot see their “tells,” which means you cannot estimate if a player is bluffing or if he really has a good hand. You cannot see your opponent flinch at your bet, or at the flop. However, you can still observe their betting patterns, and that is where you unleash your poker skills.

Now that you have learned some of the basics of online poker, then you are good to go. The key to online poker is the same as it is in offline games: you should not overdo it. Take everything in moderation and be sure to choose the right poker site to trust your money with. Who knows, the next time you go all in online, you might just win the big pot.

Depending on which variation is being played, the cards are dealt in their agreed upon number by the dealer. In informal and home games, the dealer is the player to the left of the player who dealt the previous round, each player taking it in turn. Online and in casinos where there is a dedicated dealer, the position of the first player is marked by a ‘button’ which rotates to mark the theoretical dealer and the cards are dealt in the same rotation as they would be in an informal game, as if the ‘button’ player were the dealer. This is to ensure the fairness of betting principles and positional equality.

To guarantee a win ensure that in your poker strategy all the cards are dealt and all the bets have been placed, the winner is the one with the highest hand unless all the other players have ‘folded’ in which case the last player in the game is the winner. This is true for most poker games excepting Hi-Lo and Lo games. In a Hi-Lo game the pot is split between the highest hand and the low, or in a Lo game the player with the lowest hand wins. Cards only need to be declared if a player has ‘called’ the final bet of another player (or players) and it is a matter of the highest hand, otherwise the cards need not be declared. This facet of the game in conjunction with the betting system allows for a great deal of deception or ‘bluffing’.

POT ODDS AND IMPLIED ODDS

In poker strategy pot odds are the mathematical probability you have of receiving the card or cards you need. As an example, if you have two same-suit cards in the hole for a game of Texas Hold ‘Em and the ‘flop’ gives another two of the same suit, then there are a possible nine ‘out’ cards which will let you make your flush, since there are thirteen cards of each suit in the deck. A quick way of calculating the approximate percentage of getting another card of the same suit is to double the number of ‘out’ cards and add one.

To understand Implied Odds and master the poker strategy, you need to be aware of the Pot Odds. The real difference between the two is that at certain stage of a game the pot odds might not be in your favour, but if there are more rounds of betting to come the projected odds are differ to the Pot Odds that currently exist. These projected or Implied Odds might swing the percentages your way. Another poker strategy is to make an educated guess as to who will stay in and what sort of betting might transpire and then to calculate the probable Pot Odds of the next round of betting is what Implied Odds are all about.

POKER STRATEGY – BLUFFING AND SLOW PLAYING

It is to the players advantage to mislead his opponents as to his own hand and, similarly, to force his opponents to give up information about their hands. Bluffing, the deliberate misleading as to one’s hand, may be part of a long-term strategy and nurtured over a long period of game play. It is primarily characterised by playing as if one had a better hand, thus attempting to induce players with better hands to ‘fold’. To be implemented successfully it needs to be used at the right time. The regular use of bluffing makes the bluffer vulnerable as opponents can use this predictability to their advantage.

‘Slow-playing’ is another form of poker strategy and involves deception differing from the ‘bluff’ in that it is characterised by playing stronger hands as though they were weak. A very effective poker strategy which works well in conjunction with well timed ‘bluffing’ and is invariably part of the good players long-term poker strategy.

POKER STRATEGY – AGGRESSIVE PLAY AND PASSIVE PLAY

Aggressive Play is the practice of betting and raising, especially at the beginning of the hand, to make players fold who might otherwise stay in for a ‘check’ round. The idea being that aggressive betting implies a good starting hand for whichever variation of poker is being played. The fewer players left in a hand, the greater the probability of your hand being the winning one, but Aggressive Play should be used cleverly with your poker strategy and not all the time. It is generally accepted that Passive Play, the art of betting enough to keep other players in the game and raise the pot, allows a more detailed approach to betting and forces opponents to make mistakes while you learn to understand their hands. Passive Play takes more focus, but if used properly in conjunction with calculated bluffing and Aggressive Play it will pay off in the long run and you poker strategy will be a waste.

POKER STRATEGY – TELLS

A legendary aspect of poker strategy which is characterised by being able to read an opponent’s idiosyncrasies in order to judge whether they are bluffing. Certain players may have things they do which give their poker strategy away. The longer you play an opponent the more likely you are to discover their quirk and this is a good poker strategy to consider. Some players have a physical ‘tick’ and some just play differently. These are valuable traits to discover and most poker players do their utmost to avoid giving themselves away in this manner. Some very astute players can use their own ‘tells’ against you if they know you can see them.

It does not really take a rocket scientist to understand the rules of play when it comes to poker. You just have to understand the basic rules of play
and know which hands to actually set down during the game. This poker cheat sheet is designed to help you understand some of the most basic principles of the poker in general
and to help you develop your strategies. After all
a card player is not defined by the amount he or she plunks at the table
but rather by the strategies he or she uses to win round after round.

Poker Cheat Sheet # 1: Learn The Game First And You Will Know The Lingo

It’s not enough these days to say that you are going to play poker. There are so many variations now to this card game that it is quite simple to get lost in “poker speech.” So
for clarification purposes
poker is poker is poker … except when people say video poker (which is really a computer game / slot machine); and Red Dog Poker (which is more similar to the game of blackjack than anything else.) All other variations like Five Card Draw
Omaha
Primero
Seven Card Stud
Texas Hold’em and Three-Card Brag have the same winning principle: you need 5 cards to lay out a (hopefully!) winning hand.

Poker Cheat Sheet # 2: Know When To Fold And When To Go With Gut Instinct

Some of the most “notorious” card players believe in 2 things: luck and their gut instincts. Although these seem innocuous enough
you as a beginner should remember that poker is a betting game; and luck may turn sour oh-so-quickly; and your gut instinct may just be a gas build-up over the taco you had for dinner. Conservative playing is one way of learning from other players’ triumphs and mistakes. After all
you cannot expect to win all the time
and you certainly do not want to lose all the time. Bet conservatively at the start of the game. If you find your cards less than desirable
fold immediately.

Poker Cheat Sheet # 3: Stop Trying To Figure Out If Your Opponent Is Bluffing!

If you think that your hand has a fighting chance
then you can slowly build up your bets. The other card players on the table are heaping too much money on the table
and you keep wondering whether or not he or she is bluffing. Instead of wasting your energy figuring out the truth behind those hideous poker faces
concentrate on this one fact: your opponent may not be bluffing at all! And stop bluffing yourself. This risky move (according to stats) has only 1% chance of ever winning.

Poker is all or nothing. If you think your hand will win
then keep it. If not
it would be better to fold while you are ahead.

Poker Cheat Sheet # 4: Know Which Hands To Keep

Indubitably
face cards are the greatest things to get
since there is all likelihood of putting out a winning hand when you have a set. However
one or two or three cards mean absolutely nothing in a game of poker. You need five… always five. So instead of focusing you attention to just the face cards
(which many beginners are prone to do
) think of the 5 cards – the hand
and how it will fare in the game. A straight flush can win over a full house. A straight can win over a three-of-a-kind. And never discount the power of a high-card hand; that may also be the only thing your opponent has against you.

Many other people get into online poker because they don’t have ready access to an offline casino or poker room and like the convenience they associate with online poker. And there are some people that get into online poker because they want to make money playing it. If you are one of these people, then there are two primary ways you can go about making money at online poker, both of which are discussed in more detail below.

Winning

The most obvious way to make money at online poker is to simply become a winning poker player. That might sound simple, but the actual carrying out of this plan is anything but simple. If you want to become a winning poker player, you need to teach yourself to not only play with selective hand selection before the flop, but you also need to teach yourself to play aggressively and have no respect whatsoever for money. If you respect the money you are betting then you will not press all of your opportunities and advantages and ultimately that could mean the difference between winning and losing in an activity as volatile as online poker.

If you are willing to train yourself to be selective and aggressive in your online poker play, then you can start reading poker books to get the different strategies that people have found to be successful. You can then choose the ones that appeal to you the most and start utilizing those and learning from your mistakes until you become a winning poker player. This will not be an easy path to follow and it is one that requires constant study of your own play to make improvements, but it is definitely a way for you to make money at online poker if that is what you choose to do.

Bonus Collection

For people that do not feel particularly inclined to put in the large hours required to become a winning poker player online, another way that you can make money at online poker is bonus collection. While the potential for money making is a lot less with this method, it is also a method that is a lot easier to learn. You only need to know how to play break even poker when you are collecting bonuses, because the bonuses themselves will make your money for you.

Bonus collection is simply the art of going around to the different poker websites and collecting the bonuses they offer. Poker sites all have deposit bonuses and depending on the site also have reload bonuses, weekly bonuses and monthly bonuses as well. All of these bonuses can be collected if you play enough poker and that is exactly why bonus collection can make you money. Just keep in mind that the potential for money making is lower with this strategy, even if the overall implementation is easier.

Tight, aggressive play brings rewards

If you are going to win at online poker , then your tactics have to reflect tight and aggressive style. What this means is that you have to be willing to fold away the bad, ugly hands when you sit down at a poker table. When you play poker, you have to have the patience to wait for solid starting hands. The flip side of that is when you get one of these hands, you have to be both willing and able to attack with them. You need to be raising and you should be throwing out appropriate size bets. These are the poker chip tricks that winning players follow, and their play reflects positive expected value.

Value betting the river
One of the ploys that will set an good online poker player apart from an average poker player is the principle of appropriately betting the river. Many players just don’t understand that you have to be able to get some value out of your hands at every single street. If you have a reasonable expectation that you have the best hand, it is not good enough just to check when your opponent checks to you on the river. You have to throw out a value bet that is sized perfectly. It needs to be something that is just small enough for your opponent to call. This is the place where good players get ahead in poker tournaments and great cash game players make a living.

The art of bluffing
If you read about poker and talk about poker, then you will know that bluffing is one of those ploys that gets a lot of press. How should you do it? When should you do it? It ultimately comes down to reading your own table. This is an overused ploy at its core in most games. You should know that there are some players who just won’t be bluffed off of a hand. Instead of getting frustrated at them, you should adjust your own game and use them to your advantage.

It is important to know the rules of poker, regardless of you playing the game online or offline. The Texas Holdem poker rules are not that difficult, however the basic poker rules are fairly simple. It is also one of the most popular forms of poker but at the same time it requires a lot of skill in order to master the game.

The most important step in learning Texas Holdem poker would be to understand the basic poker rules thoroughly. This also includes knowing the different cards and hands in poker. It is imperative for a player to recognise the best hands as far as the poker tournaments are concerned. There are some minor differences when it comes to the rules, but it requires a lot of patience while learning the Texas Holdem poker.

The essential key here is to make the best possible hand out of the five community cards along with a pair of hole cards. The best hand made using these cards would determine the winner. For all of those merely learning to play Texas Holdem poker, they should know that the game begins with two opening bets. Once the bets are done, the cards are dealt out to the players face down. After this, there is playing of community cards with rounds of betting at various intervals.

At the same time as it is possible to fold any time during online gambling, all those who play Texas Holdem poker would notice that things can drastically change while the third and the fifth community cards are dealt. It would be advisable to back out if the hole cards along with the first few community cards do not look good.

Online Poker News Archive – June 2009
On this page we’ve listed summaries of the most important news events of June 2009

The PokerNews Top 10: Significant WSOP Innovations
After that final, exciting rush of eliminations last Wednesday night, the first seven weeks of the 2009 World Series of Poker came to a dramatic…

Betting Strategy at Three Card Poker
Although this table game uses the hand rankings and general concept of poker, it lacks the subtlety and skill of variations like Texas holdem and seven card stud, where the players compete directly with one another. In fact, three card poker is even simpler to play than blackjack, in which the player must learn the optimal decision for each set of hands in relation to the dealers up card. Three card poker involves only three decisions: Is it worth playing due to the payout structure? Should I bet the Pair Plus? Do I fold or play my hand? Lets start with the first question. While roughly similar, there are several different payout structures on the ante bet, which vary from casino to casino. Fortunately, the difference in house edge in almost all of these structures is less than 1%. When choosing where to play, your best option will be a table that pays 5 to 1 on a straight flush and 4 to 1 on three of a kind, although 3 to 1 isnt much worse. You should be aware, however, that there are some casinos that do not pay a bonus on the ante when the player makes a straight, improving the house edge. If possible, avoid three card poker at these casinos, even if a special payout for a Mini Royal Flush is offered. The next decision you need to make is whether or not to play the Pair Plus circle. A friend of mine once told me a story about how his father had won a lot of money using the strategy of betting on the Pair Plus, as if this were some sort of expert move. On the contrary, the Pair Plus is often seen as a sucker bet, as it serves merely to increase the house edge, though the prospect of a big payday on a straight flush is certainly enticing. The most common pay structure, in which a flush pays 3 to 1, is actually the least favorable to the player. In general, play at places that offer 4 to 1 odds on a flush and 6 to 1 on a straight; the other hands are rare enough that slight variations in the payout do not much matter. If youve decided to play in the game at all, you must then choose to fold or play your hand each round. Fortunately, this is probably the easiest decision of all: bet the Play if your hand is Q-6-4 or better and fold if it is lower. In other words, play any hand that contains a king, any hand that contains a queen and a seven or better, and any hand that contains a queen, a six, and a four or better. This hand is the cutoff point for where the player begins to lose less than he would lose by folding. Using this strategy and betting the Pair Plus would give the house an edge of a little over 5%, which is higher than blackjack and some bets on the craps table but not too bad when compared with many of the other bets in the casino.
