Texas Hold’em: The Strategic Poker Game
Texas holdem poker, sometimes called holdem, has steadily become the most popular variation of poker in casinos and card rooms everywhere in the West. The card game is a community game in which each player can use five community cards in addition to his two hole cards, using which he makes a poker hand. This is different from other kinds of poker, wherein individual hands are used per player.
Texas holdem can be a very technically-oriented game, with a lot of scope for strategic and mathematical analysis. This is due to the fact that each player holds only two of his own cards, and the rest of the cards are shared. The game has risen in popularity to such an extent that there are several books on the strategy and method of play.
The game usually involves competing for the money in the pot, which is contributed by the players or the house. Each player has to try to control the money in the pot according to the hand he is dealt and is holding. It is divided into several numbers of hands or deals, with each hand ending with the pot being handed over to a particular player.
The game is played not with the objective of winning every hand that is played, but to maximize the long-term earnings from the pot. This way the player can use strategically made decisions to win the game.
It is generally accepted that this version of poker came into being in Texas in the early 1900s. It was popular at first in Texas before spreading to Las Vegas in the late 1960s by some Texan gamblers. It was described then as a thinking mans game. Later, the game started to spread outside the state of Nevada, starting with California in the late 1980s.
